Early in my pregnancy, I decided to knit a blanket for my baby. Having started knitting less than a year before that, I had never done a large project like that and was determined to see it through to the end. I chose a simple pattern, ordered the yarn, and got started right away. By the time baby Star arrived I had completed two things of the blanket - a huge accomplishment for me! As I figured would happen, it got harder & harder to work on the project as she grew, so I set it aside and only picked it up a few times over the next several months.
This past weekend, I picked it up and realized I was barely a dozen rows from finishing the entire blanket, so I set a goal to work on at least one row a day until it was done. Thanks to the power of hyper focusing and a good TV show, I had it completed before the weekend ended!
While I had hoped I would be able to give this blanket to Star as a newborn baby, I now get to watch my nearly-a-toddler daughter unwrap it as she opens gifts to celebrate her first birthday. She recently started playing peek-a-book by putting things over her head and I imagine that this blanket will serve as a covering for that game the moment she sees it. Along with using it to play, I'm certain she'll enjoy snuggling in it, dragging it around, and chewing on it as she grows yet another little tooth.
I was fairly new to knitting when I started this project and since then I have made hats, socks, and a lovey for Star, not to mention the many other items that I've crocheted for her. I'm proud that I stuck through to the end and eventually finished such a large project, especially considering being a mom has made it more challenging to take time for hobbies like this one. It means a lot that I get to use fiber art to clothe & comfort my daughter, and I'm looking forward to working on whatever pattern strikes my fancy next. Then one day, if she's interested in learning, I may just get to teach my sweet girl how to make items of her own.
