As I mentioned in yesterday's post, this past weekend I added new bird feeders to my yard.
The feeding options I had provided before were small & limited, being just one suet cake on each end of the house, so I wanted to include plenty of eating spaces that the birds wouldn't need to fight over. I had been looking around online and at local farm supply stores, but none of the ones I found were really speaking to me; I wanted them to be special. After researching some options for DIY feeders, I came across this idea of using tea cups & saucers - items I have in plenty, because one of my favorite hobbies is drinking tea & collecting tea ware - and for the next two days I was unable to focus on anything else. I ordered some glue, twine, and more bird seed, and set to rummaging through my boxes of tea ware to find the perfect pieces. I'll be featuring each of them in different posts at some point, and today I'm showing off my favorite one of them all.
This Green Wheat Fields by Van Gogh set was a purchase I made two years ago on a very significant day. Sadly, it ended up in storage quite quickly because I didn't have a great space to display it as I had planned. Now though, it hangs on the tree in my backyard, vibrant & inviting, and has already been visited by many different types of birds. I check it every time I'm downstairs in my dining room, and it's like this tiny spark of light that never fails to brighten my day. While I quite enjoy snapping photos of my winged visitors when I get the chance, there is nothing quite like watching them without the pressure of setting an adequate shutter speed and tracking their every move. I'm looking forward to the day when my daughter can join me as I re-fill the feeders, pick a spot to observe at a respectful distance, and enjoy the presence of whoever flies in to pick up some grub.
